NCRLL Mission

The mission of NCRLL is fourfold:

  1. To encourage discussion among the membership of new directions in researching language and literacy (including new directions in theoretical framings, logics-of-inquiry, and methodologies);
  2. To promote awareness of language and literacy scholarship occurring outside of the U.S. and Canada;
  3. To provide opportunities for the mentorship of scholars new to the field of research in language and literacy; and,
  4. To recognize the sustained achievement of excellence in the conduct of research on language and literacy by individual members of NCRLL.

Operational Statement

To operationalize the four aspects of the NCRLL mission, the NCRLL Board of Directors is responsible for insuring that the following activities are accomplished:

  1. To maintain a listserv that provides information about opportunities for members (a) to share language and literacy scholarship and (b) to discuss language and literacy scholarship;
  2. To organize and propose sessions at the Literacy Research Association (LRA) annual meeting that brings outstanding language and literacy scholars from outside the U.S. and Canada to share their research with NCRLL members and others;
  3. To organize workshops and/or sessions at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) that provide mentoring opportunities for scholars new to the field of research in language and literacy; and,
  4. To organize and to award to deserving members of NCRLL the status of “Distinguished Scholar of Language and Literacy” using the following guidelines (which may be supplemented by additional guidelines promulgated by the NCRLL Board of Directors): Awardees must (a) have a career as a language and literacy scholar of no less than 15 years, (b) have a sustained record of outstanding and impactful research over the course of a career, (c) be an active scholar at the time of receiving the award, and (d) have a clear record of and commitment to mentorship. No more than four such awards may be given by NCRLL in any calendar year. The NCRLL Board of Directors is charged with designing a process for the nomination, vetting, and awarding of such status and for insuring that such awarding brings distinction both to the individual and to NCRLL.
