Who We Are

The National Council on Research in Language and Literacy (NCRLL) is a professional organization dedicated to language and literacy scholarship. Building from the long and impactful history of NCRLL, the organization aims to foster a vibrant, inclusive next stage in NCRLL’s rich trajectory.  NCRLL membership is open to all educators and researchers in the field of language, literacy, and English education.

What We Do

Within NCRLL, we seek to:

  • Amplify scholarship that contributes to goals of equity, anti-oppression, and anti-racism and engage in responsible intellectual risk-taking that pushes the field.
  • Uplift and employ new directions in researching language and literacy (including theories and methodologies) that aim toward justice and support collaboration with schools and communities.
  • Provide opportunities for intergenerational interaction and mentorship for scholars in the field of research in language and literacy.
  • Recognize scholarly accomplishments by individual members of NCRLL, including attention to the vital work that occurs across the varying institutions and geographies in which NCRLL members are located (e.g., public and private teaching-intensive and regional universities and colleges, research-intensive universities, etc.).

Our Community

NCRLL members often participate in conference sessions at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the Literacy Research Association (LRA) Conferences, which provides opportunities for NCRLL members to gather to share research and inform the direction of the organization. In addition, NCRLL hosts webinars, pursues publication opportunities, and sponsors awards that recognize distinguished scholarship at three points in career: Early, Mid, and Senior. NCRLL is committed to finding ways for members to share and discuss leading-edge language and literacy scholarship in a welcoming, humanizing, and supportive community of scholars.
