Executive Board Positions
President
Two-year commitment
Lead NCRLL’s mission and vision as the chair of our Executive Board. You’ll work collaboratively with board members to guide strategic initiatives, represent NCRLL at national conferences, and ensure the organization continues to thrive. This role is perfect for someone ready to champion language and literacy research at the national level.
What you’ll do:
- Chair Executive Board meetings and annual membership meetings at NCTE
- Guide strategic planning and organizational development
- Collaborate with NCTE leadership as part of our assembly relationship
Vice President
Four-year commitment (two years as VP, two years as President)
Start your leadership role as Vice President and grow into the President role. This position is an excellent pathway for emerging leaders who want to make a long-term impact on our organization while honing your executive leadership skills.
What you’ll do:
- Support (and prepare to transition to) the President in all organizational activities
- Participate in strategic planning and board governance
- Lead special initiatives and projects
Treasurer/Finance Chair
Two-year commitment
Ensure NCRLL’s financial health and sustainability. This role is ideal for detail-oriented members who want to support our mission through sound fiscal management.
What you’ll do:
- Oversee organizational finances
- Prepare annual financial reports for membership
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit and IRS financial requirements
Communications Chair

Be the voice of NCRLL! Shape how we connect with members and the broader community through our website, social media, and member communications. Perfect for creative communicators who want to amplify our impact.
What you’ll do:
- Lead our digital presence and social media strategy
- Coordinate website updates with our web coordinator
- Develop innovative ways to engage our community
Membership Chair
Two-year commitment
Foster our growing community and create meaningful connections between members. You’ll manage membership processes while developing exciting new initiatives like our mentoring programs.
What you’ll do:
- Maintain membership records and coordinate renewals
- Develop and implement mentoring initiatives
- Ensure member growth and access to exclusive benefits and resources
Elections & Awards Chair
Two-year commitment
Celebrate excellence in our field while ensuring democratic participation in NCRLL governance. This role combines event planning, committee coordination, and process management.
What you’ll do:
- Coordinate annual awards process and recognition at NCTE
- Manage election processes and nominating committees
- Organize award nomination reviews and committee work
Election Timeline & Process
Elections are held every two years for all Executive Board positions, ensuring regular opportunities for new leadership and fresh perspectives. All terms begin in January of the subsequent year (after elections in the fall).
Key Dates
- Call for Nominations: Issued annually in the fall when terms are ending
- Nomination Period: Members can nominate themselves or colleagues
- Candidate Information: Shared with membership electronically
- Voting Period: All current NCRLL members eligible to vote via electronic ballot
- Results Announcement: Typically, new board members are announced at or close to the start of each calendar year.
Who Can Run?
Any current NCRLL member in good standing can run for any Executive Board position. We especially encourage nominations from:
- Emerging scholars and early-career professionals
- Members from diverse backgrounds and institutions
- Those passionate about specific aspects of language and literacy research
- Current and former committee members ready to expand their involvement
How to Get Involved
- Self-nominate or nominate a colleague when the call goes out
- Submit a brief candidate statement highlighting your vision and experience
- Vote in the election and encourage colleagues to participate
