NCRLL Policy of involvement of Black, Indigenous, & People of Color (BIPOC)
In concert with the policy of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) the National Council of Research on Language and Literacy (NCRLL) embraces diversity and demonstrates sensitivity to the concerns of people of color across various intersections of gender, sexuality, ability, and ethnicity. BIPOC refers to historically underrepresented groups — African Americans, Pacific Islanders, First Nations and Indigenous peoples, Asian Americans, and Latine. NCRLL values the commitment to embrace diversity and to include people of color. In order to monitor the implementation of this policy, NCRLL leaders will sustain an equitable and inclusive sensitivity
- on appointed commissions, boards, committees, task forces, and other official groups;
- among the nominees presented by each nominating committee;
- among the leadership of the above groups;
- in NCRLL-sponsored NCTE Convention events;
- among NCRLL leaders and/or consultants;
- in verbal and visual materials intended to represent or describe NCTE;
- in any recruiting efforts.
The intent of this policy should not be construed to impose any particular requirements on NCRLL or to mean every subcommittee within a commission, board, committee, task force, or other official group.
*The Executive Board shall ensure that the selection of committee members reflects the ethnic and racial diversity of NCRLL.
